Armengol i Altayó, Agnès

Agnès Armengol i Altayó, born in Sabadell in 1852 to a family of textile manufacturers, received her early education at Les Escolàpies in Sabadell and later in Barcelona and Castres, where she developed her musical and literary talents. Under the pseudonym Graziella - inspired by Alphonse de Lamartine's novel - she won a prize in Chicago in 1893 with compositions such as Suspirs and established herself as a pianist and composer. At the same time, she published poems in magazines such as Lo Catalanista and La Llumanera de Nova York and campaigned for the spread of Catalan culture. She died in Sabadell in 1934, where her death caused public mourning and sympathy.
